My Philosophies:
Read on to discover my common-sense food philosophy - learn how (and why) to stop battling your food and start enjoying it again.
(1) Food should be fuel, filling, AND fun!
Food is Fuel:
What you put in your body matters... it will literally be used to make up your body's structures. We are living, breathing organisms with specific energy and nutrient needs. Focusing on a "diet of inclusivity" - making sure you include foods to meet these needs - is the surest way to optimal health and longevity.
Food is Filling:
Our internal drives are programmed to ensure our survival, so it's important to be aware of our hunger- and satiety-cues. Eating a nutrient-dense diet shouldn't mean depriving yourself of the satisfaction of a full meal, as constantly feeing hungry can have major long-term negative consequences for your health.
Food is Fun:
The pleasure derived from eating isn't self-indulgent, it's essential for good mental health and well being. I practice an "all foods fit" philosophy - there is no such thing as a "bad" or "unhealthy" food, though some foods are certainly more directly "helpful" for our bodies than others.
(2) Weight: A two-sided coin Weight-Normative Practices vs. Health at Every Size (HAES)
Some RDNs identify themselves as "weight loss" or "weight normative" dietitians - they focus on achieving weight change outcomes for their clients to within a range that is considered "normal" or "healthy" according to population-based statistics and medical data. And there is a lot of truth in recognizing relative health risks at certain weights/body sizes.
Other RDNs identify as "Health at Every Size" (HAES) dietitians - they recognize that there is so much more happening inside a body (and a mind, and a life) than just what the number on the scale says, so they focus on diet and lifestyle changes to promote health and quality-of-life outcomes without focusing on weight specifically.
The truth is, there is ample scientific evidence to support (or refute!) either perspective.
So I am both. Or maybe neither. I don't believe a dietitian can truly offer client-centered care while applying just one philosophy to our recommendations. I prefer to thoroughly get to know my clients - your physical health, mental health, life history and stressors, schedule, experiences, outlook, food preferences, movement preferences, and more - and then we can decide together a course of action that is right for YOU.
